Reading Socials

Get involved n one of the many reading socials happening regularly at Nottingham Central Library.

Reading Socials

Welcome to the Nottingham Central Library Reading Socials.

Reading Socials are our reading groups and are a great way to meet like-minded people, talk about books and have fun! Reading groups usually involve reading a book and discussing together. Our Reading Socials are more informal, and will sometimes involve reading a particular book, but other times include reading a certain author, or towards a certain theme. There is also no commitment, you can attend regularly, occasionally, or just once.  It is whatever suits you.

All of our groups meet in Meeting Room 2 on Floor 1. No need to book, just come along!

Better Read than Never

First Wednesday of every month, 5:30pm to 6:30pm

August’s Book: Hex by Jenni Fagan and/or The Manning Tree Witches by A.K. Blakemore

This is our fiction reading group!

This group is reading general fiction, which also includes historical fiction reads as well. We will have sessions that are reading specific books, but for the first couple of sessions, we will be discussing what you have been reading and recommending recently so we can curate reading lists from there.

Come along to discuss your favourite reads with one of our members of staff!

The Listening Chain

Second Wednesday of every month, 2pm to 3pm.

August’s Book: To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

Aimed at any adult who finds it difficult to read standard printed books, mainly due to visual impairment but also because of any other disability or factor, we read a variety of genres which is great to expand the types of books that members read!

Come along and discuss books with one of our members of staff, for more information visit our page for the Visually Impaired.

Or contact us at Nottingham Central Library on 0115 9152828 or email central.library@nottinghamcity.gov.uk, to find out more about joining.

Crime Central

Third Wednesday of every month, 5.30pm to 6.30pm

August’s Book: The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor

This is our Crime and Thriller reading group.  We will have sessions that are reading specific books, but for the first couple of sessions, we will be discussing what you have been reading and recommending recently so we can curate reading lists from there.

Come along to discuss your favourite reads with one of our members of staff!

Literary Pride

August Theme: an LGBTQ+ fiction or non-fiction book written for children or YA

This is our LGBTQ+ reading group.  Reading groups typically read a chosen book each month, but this reading group works differently. This is more of a social, where we have themes to read towards each month, such as ‘found family’, or ‘bi representation’, as well as time to share other recommendations and general socialising.
